Thomas McWilliams was commissioned Captain of Marines aboard the Sloop Molly, on December 14, 1776.  He probably also served aboard her during 1777 because records show he was paid for his services then.  He subscribed to the oath of allegiance to the United States In 1778 in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. Thomas McWilliams married Mary (Mary Ann) Mattingly, daughter of Clement Mattingly. She was born October 6, 1741.  Her sister Elizabeth married Thomas’ brother, Kenelm McWilliams.  Thomas’ will was made September 20, 1790, and proved January 22, 1791.  It names his wife Mary, sons James, Edward, Alexander, George, Clement, and Thomas, and daughters, Margaret, Mary, Ann, and Catherine.  His name also appears in an old Newtown Manor Record Book of 1765-1768.  [2]
