Patriot Grave Marking of Captain William Harwar Parker and Captain …
Patriot Grave Marking of Captain William Harwar Parker and Captain James McIlhaney on 21 May 2023 at the McIlhaney Family Cemetery in Hillsboro, VA.
William H. Parket was born in …Westmoreland County, VA, on 12 Jan 1752. He joined the VA State Navy as a midshipman on 22 Sept 1777, where he served aboard the Virginia State Ship (VSS) Tartar between 1777 and June 1780. He was aboard the Tempest during the Battle of Osborne’s Landing on 27 Apr 1781. Lieutenant Parker, the Tempest’s captain, and other crew members were in one of the Tempest’s boards. They were rowing away from the burning ship when the captain decided to surrender to the British after being fired upon. Parker chose to jump overboard and swim to the opposite shore where the Virginia militia was present. He later joined a small and unique cavalry unit called “Mercer’s Troop of Volunteer Gentlemen,” led by John Mercer. Parker was present at the 6 July 1781 Battle of Green Spring near Williamsburg, VA. Market continued with Mercer’s troops through the Siege of Yorktown and was demobilized from the Va State Navy in Nov 1781.
Jame McIlhany/McIlhaney was born on 22 Sept 1749 in Loudoun County, VA. He served in the Continental Army from 1775 to 1778. He was appointed Lieutenant in the 10th Virginia Regiment on 25 March 1776, and was promoted to Captain in the Fifth (later Ninth) Virginia Regiment. He found in battles of Brandywine and Germantown. He resigned from the service in June 1778 and married Margaret Tribbery Williams on 28 Dec 1778. They had nine children – Cecilia, Louisa, Mary, Elizabeth, Nancy, Rosanna, Mortimer, James and John. Several of them are buried in the McIlhaney cemetery in Loudoun County. James dies on 16 Sept 1804. His heirs received a land grant of 400 acres in 1834.[+] Show More
